Hope you guys have a great school year! When people hear the word “autism” they still have this image of a person who won’t communicate or ever live a “normal” life. What they don’t realize is that autism is such a huge spectrum with such a variety of people included. 50 years ago, Today’s autistic child would have been “eccentric”.

Can you tell that labels irk me?

:) Your kids are beautiful, btw.

Positively Autistic

Autism, video Comments (2)

Estée Klar from The Joy of Autism has posted a video (which aired in 2008 on CBC) called Positively Autistic on her site. It shows what it’s like to be Autistic but from the perspective of adult Autistics, which most people aren’t exposed to. Some wonderful quotes from clip 1:

The lack of positive expectation that people have about an autistic person can really stifle that person’s growth, lower their self-esteem, and ultimately be the catalyst that creates a lot of the situations that friends and family are really fearing the most.

Assume competence.
Set the bar high.
You can lower it if you have to,
But you may well find yourself having to raise it higher.
Never say never.
