New “Year”, New “Method”

Up until this point I’ve been homeschooling on the fly.  I’d read about some interesting book, buy it and then try to apply it to the subject it addressed.  For instance I settled on Saxon for Math and Phonics and then went about using them.   That was fine until I noticed that there were certain things that Kamikazee wasn’t just casually “picking up” the way I assumed he eventually would.  So I decided to read up on more structured philosophies.  I ordered The Well Trained Mind and Charlotte Mason’s Original Homeschooling Series.

Charlotte Mason arrived first and that seemed interesting but the six volumes intimidated me.  I thought to myself, “I’ll have to read all that before I can say that I understand how to do this”.  So when The Well Trained Mind arrived last Tuesday, I quickly picked it up since while quite thick and intimidating looking it still wasn’t 6 whole volumes.

Turns out I only had to read the first part and that was all I needed to feel comfortable with this approach.  I found that I had already gravitated to some of the books that were recommended. I’m excited about using The Well Trained Mind  as a system to home school.  It’s very, very, language based which has me wondering how I’ll be able to use it with Tremendo but I’ll figure it out.

That’s it for now.  I’ll write a more detailed review soon.  As you can see my store has a got a few of the books that The Well Trained Mind recommends one use.  I’ll be adding new products weekly and as I read so keep checking.
